The UN Secretary-General Welcomes The Exchange Of Captives In The Donbas
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomes the exchange of detainees between Kyiv and the Donbas republics and hopes for further progress in resolving the conflict in Eastern Ukraine. This is reported in a statement published on Thursday on the website of the Secretary General's office.
"[The Secretary-General] hopes that this important humanitarian action, which took place on the eve of Orthodox Easter, will be a positive step towards further progress, including a permanent ceasefire, <...> as well as the continuation of the withdrawal of forces and ensuring unhindered access to humanitarian assistance across the line of contact of the parties," the message reads.
The statement also notes that the Secretary-General calls on all parties to continue working on the implementation of the Minsk agreements.
On Thursday, a few days before Orthodox Easter, the first exchange of detainees in 2020 took place between the republics of Donbas and Kyiv, as agreed by the parties at the last meeting of the contact group on April 8. Kyiv handed over 10 detainees to the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) and four to the Luhansk People's Republic (LPR). In turn, the DPR released nine people and the LPR-11. The total number of people released was less than planned. Four people from those who were requested by the LPR refused to return to the Republic for family reasons.
