EAST LANSING The volume went up on Monday afternoon in the Berkowitz Basketball Complex.
As Michigan State practiced preparation for the Wednesday game at Butler (7 p.m. FS1), crowd noise began to poop at a high decibel when the ball was in play.
Izzo is a tactic that Tom doesn't use on Sunday for training a team. But that means he did what I was doing on Monday.
For one, he has a program that first plays at one of the iconic college basketball sites for the first time he's playing. Indianapolis Hinkle Fieldhouse.
For one thing, his team hasn't played a true road game in more than twenty months.
If the Spartans did have a lot of noise, the player could have forgotten what it was like to play in it.
Izzo said, We just wanted to make sure, the first time they have actually been on the road, bring crowd noise Izzo said.
The last time that Michigan State played in a real road environment was on March 3, 2020 when Xavier Tillman ran a defensive deficit for the Spartans against Penn State and kept them in the standings of their Big Ten title dreams alive.
Most Michigan State played in front of friends and family at most. The Spartans season ended a week after that game, and last season was played without half capacity, due to COVID-19 restrictions.
That means every freshman and sophomore on Michigan State's roster have never played a true college basketball road game, after the Spartans opened this season with a neutral site game against Kansas and a home game against Western Michigan.
Izzo said this guy, especially our freshmen, haven't really been on the road, and our sophomores haven't really been on the road, and our juniors and seniors haven't been on the road for 15 months, Izzo said.
Those players on Michigan States roster who have played basketball a long time ago are looking forward to doing so again, even if they know that the crowd will be less than inviting.
It's been a while since the entire crowd from you. I think it'll be interesting and a lot of fun for us.
Those days, Michigan State will play at Butler in the Gavitt Games matchup if they lose against No. 3 Kansas and are beaten by Western Michigan on Friday.
The Spartans have shot 28.2 percent from 3-point range and 60.5 percent from the free throw line in these two games. Izzo said players have put in extra sessions during the weekend to shoot free throw in particular, and Izzo said its a possibility that the season continues on.
Izzo said that, Sometimes if you miss a few things, it gets in your head, but Izzo doesnt really worry about it.
Michigan State turns the ball almost once in every five possessions, making a particular point in practice a practice point.
The 93-year-old venue is known as the theater for the movie Hoosiers. Although Michigan played a lot of games in Indianapolis, it doesn't play one since 1971. But the 93-year-old venue was used by the actor who made up the movie in 1971.
Izzo said that coaching a game was one of his bucket list items. Now, Izzo wants to come back with better knowledge of what type of team he has.
Izzo said that you learn a lot about your team, see how they are doing, see whether they are mentally tough enough to handle it and physically difficult enough to handle it.
