The company of Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE), the one that owns Audi, discussed the question of getting into Formula One in two-quarters at a meeting last week, said two sources who declined to be named.

McLaren Automotive denied a report that Audi bought the British luxury sportscar maker on Monday, but left the door open for "relevant partners and suppliers" to technological collaboration.

Audi spokesperson told Reuters it was "looking at a couple of cooperation ideas" but didn't confirm whether it was interested in talking with McLaren about a potential sale.

A carmaker would acquire a second supercar in Audi's books together with Lamborghini, which it owned since 1998.
