Globus Medical Inc (GMED.N) has approached NUVA.O, a u.S. company for minimally invasive spine surgery with an acquisition offer, experts familiar with the matter said.

There would be a potential combination that could accelerate consolidation in the spine surgery market, with smaller players turning to dealmaking to compete with the likes of Johnson & Johnson, Medtronic Plc (MDT.N), and Zimmer Biomet Holdings Inc (ZBH.N).

Globus, which is a provider of implantable instruments and instruments used in spine and orthopedic surgeries, made an official cash-and-stock offer for NuVasive in recent weeks, sources said.

These companies are preliminary and there is no certainty a deal will be reached, sources added, requesting anonymity because it's confidential.

NuVasive refused to comment, while a Globus spokesperson didn't respond immediately to a comment.

The stock price at the company's inlet has been down 2% year-to-date, compared to a 10% increase in its sales since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last month, NuVasive acquired Simplify Medical in San Diego with a $150 million cash flow for its cervical spine technology portfolio.

This article called the name "Gearbus Medical" in the headline in the "Global Medical Report" read.
