Reducing methane is the best way to save the planet
Methane gas is moved from a landfill to a power plant in Irvine, California, on June 15, 2021. In four decades of climate negotiations, the world has focused on the most abundant climate-warming gas: carbon dioxide. This year, scientists are urging a focus on another potent greenhouse gas, methane.
While methane and CO2 warm the atmosphere, the two greenhouse gases are not equal, posing challenges for countries where agriculture and livestock are important industries. The report puts a lot of pressure on the world to step up its game on methane because it shows that a single CO2 molecule causes less warming than a methane molecule. If skies were not filled with pollution, the world would have seen an additional half a degree of warming.
The EU is proposing laws this year that will force oil and gas companies to monitor and report methane emissions and to repair leaks. Some environmental groups and government officials want a global agreement on methane, which could start with methane from the oil and gas industry. He said that there's no exotic technology required.
"So let's start there."
