Pavel Durov Spoke Out Against The Duopoly Of Apple And Google

The Creator of Telegram messenger Pavel Durov spoke out against the duopoly of Apple and Google in the field of distribution of digital applications.

These companies, in his opinion, demonstrate an unprecedented example of centralization and imbalance, when entire sectors of the digital economy are drained of blood by exorbitant fees, which are possible only in the absence of competition.

App developers spend significant resources on creating, maintaining, and promoting their projects. They compete fiercely with each other and carry huge risks. Apple does not invest almost any money in creating third-party applications on its platform and does not risk anything, but it is guaranteed to receive 30% of their turnover. The situation is almost as sad for developers on Google's Android smartphones.

"In fact, today all the developers in the world who sell premium and digital services to smartphone users work for Apple and Google more than for themselves. As a result, Apple and Google are accumulating tens of billions of dollars in their offshore accounts, while hundreds of thousands of local development teams around the world are on the verge of economic survival. Funds that could allow startups to continue improving their products and pleasing users are stored on the balance of Apple and Google.

Such a situation is an unprecedented example of centralization and imbalance, where entire sectors of the digital economy are drained of blood by exorbitant fees, which are only possible in the absence of competition," Durov said.

According to the founder of Telegram, it is not an easy task to prevent two supranational corporations from collecting tax from all of humanity. Corporations employ thousands of lobbyists, lawyers, and PR agents. Their budgets are unlimited. At the same time, app developers are scattered and scared, as the fate of their projects depends entirely on the favor of Apple and Google. However, the time for fear has passed. Now we need to start talking directly and openly about the perniciousness of the current situation — perniciousness for billions of users, for hundreds of thousands of developers, for national economies, for global progress.

Durov calls on everyone to stop paying the 30% "digital tax" to the budget of Apple and Google, both at the level of developer companies and the state level. He also stated that Telegram is ready to participate in the recently opened EU antitrust investigation against Apple to protect the interests of users and developers of smartphone apps.

Durov has previously spoken out against the fact that Apple and Google impose taxes on developers on digital goods sold on every mobile phone in the world, and called on Internet users to refuse to install apps from the App Store and Google Play.

Faced with criticism, in late June, Apple allowed app developers to appeal the rules of its App Store.
