The US Notified The UN Of Its Final Withdrawal From WHO In A Year
The United States will leave the World Health Organization (WHO) on July 6, 2021, according to the UN after receiving official notification from the United States, reports Reuters with reference to the official representative of the UN Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric.
According to him, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres "is in the process of checking with the world health organization whether all the conditions for such an exit are met." The UN representative mentioned among the conditions for withdrawal as notification of this one year before the termination of participation in WHO, and the repayment of financial obligations to it. As the Agency notes, citing WHO data, the United States owes the organization more than $200 million in assessed contributions. The WHO confirmed to the Agency that the UN has received an official notification of withdrawal from the organization from the United States.
On May 29, US President Donald Trump announced the severance of relations with WHO due to the refusal to reform the organization's activities, which Washington insisted on. In April, Trump suspended funding for WHO, and then in a May 18 letter gave it 30 days to commit to reforms. He believes that the WHO has behaved like a "puppet of China" since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. A new type of coronavirus appeared in China, in the city of Wuhan at the end of 2019 and from there began its spread around the world. According to Johns Hopkins University at 2.00 Moscow time, 2,983,986 cases of coronavirus infection were detected in the United States, and more than 131,000 people died. The country ranks first in the world in terms of COVID-19 morbidity and mortality.
According to the American President, neither the Chinese authorities nor the WHO leadership took timely measures to alert about the threat of its spread. During his presidency, Trump withdrew the United States from participation in the UN Human Rights Council, the UN cultural Agency, agreements to combat climate change, and the Iran nuclear deal, the Agency recalled. The US President also cut funding for the UN Population Fund and the UN Agency that helps Palestinian refugees. Trump's rival in the upcoming presidential election, former Vice President Joseph Biden, said on Twitter that if he wins, he will restore US membership in the EU.
