Can you trade in your old AirPod headphones?

Can you trade in your old AirPod headphones? ...

The eagerly awaited AirPods 3 were unveiled at Apple's Unleashed event on Monday, and yes, you can now order the new 2021 Airpods. However, if you already own a pair of the second-generation AirPods (or older) and want to upgrade, can you trade in the older set?

The answer is no, at least not with Apple. While Apple accepts trade-ins for iPhones dating back to the iPhone 6S, and even grants credit for several eligible Android devices, the trade in offer doesn't apply to AirPods of any sort. Your only option with Apple is to recycle your old earbuds.

Why won't Apple give back old AirPods?

One reason you may not be able to trade in old AirPods may be due to poor sanitation. Earbuds by definition enter the human body -- in this case, the ear canal, where accumulated aortic wax (also known as cerumen) drains and accumulates. It's a natural process, but it has incredibly unpleasant side effects, and Apple may not want to accept responsibilities for cleaning or refurbishing other people'' ear gunk. (We asked Apple for comment and will update this story if we hear back.)

Another reason Apple may not accept your used AirPods may be related to economics. The expense of cleaning and reparating old AirPods and then selling them for a fraction of the price for Apple's bottom line may not make sense with the new Airpods 3 starting at $179 (169, AU$279). Demand may be too low or the process too impractical. Again, we asked Apple for clarification and will update with any comments.

Can you sell used AirPods online anywhere else?

Other places where you may sell your AirPods online to save money for the latest third-generation Airpods, such as Decluttr and BuyBackWorld, were also discovered. You can exchange your earbuds for cash at Best Buy or Amazon and receive your money on a gift card -- but don't expect hefty payouts, even for items in good condition.

With a trade-in at Best Buy, for instance, second-generation AirPods in good working condition with all charging components for $40. That's better than nothing, but it won't cover even half the cost of a new set.
