Soaring Covid cases in the United Kingdom have left the country behind the rest of Europe, with former U.S. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb urging for urgent research into a mutation known as delta plus.

Britain, which is quicker to reopen and relax restrictions than other European countries, reported the highest daily increase in new cases on Sunday since mid-July. According to Bloombergs tracker, the weekly death rate from the virus has risen to 800 for each of the past six weeks, more than in other major western European countries.

The United Kingdom has also been slow in distributing the vaccines to adolescents, despite concerns that some side effects decreased the net benefit of the shots, which means that children are less likely to develop serious illnesses. The delay meant that most older children werent given a vaccine until the school year had begun. According to the latest React-1 study led by Imperial College London, Covid-19 is more prevalent among individuals aged 17 and younger. The reproduction rate in that age group was 1.18, which means that on average each ten young people infected are passing it on to about 12 others.

The delta plus strain Gottlieb identified includes the K417N mutation, which has sparked concern because its also harbored by the beta variant that has an increased risk of reinfection.

We need urgent research to determine whether this delta plus is more transmissible, has partial immune evasion, he wrote in a tweet. Theres no indication that itll be significantly more transmissible, but we should work to characterize these and other new variants more effectively, he added.

In late June, U.K. researchers said theres no evidence to suggest the additional mutation is more alarming. In a German paper released earlier this month, researchers found that while delta and delta plus infect lung cells more effectively than the original coronavirus strain, deltaplus appears to be less harmful than delta.

Gottlieb, who is a member of Pfizers board of directors, led the FDA from 2017 to 2019. He has been promoting his new book, Uncontrolled Spread: Why Covid-19 Crushed Us and How We Can Defeat the Next Pandemic.

In England, the percentage of people testing positive for Covid-19, or about 1 in 60, continued to rise in the week ending Oct. 9, with an estimated 890,000 people suffering from Codiv-19 (or about a quarter of 60), according to the Office for National Statistics.

To date, the United Kingdom has recorded almost 140,000 Covid-related deaths in the UK.

In a statement published by the Science Media Centre on Oct. 15, Jim Naismith, he authored : At the moment, the United Kingdom has fewer Covid-19 tests than most comparable countries, this is not only seen in positive tests but also in hospital admissions and deaths, referring to the university of Oxford's professor at the University of Sussex. Each death represents a tragedy, he added.
