Sarah Dash, a musician who died in September, was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame Saturday night, her words echoing loud and clear.
Danny DeVito, a member of Asbury Parks own Danny deVitto's assistant, took the stage with Dash' s family' permission to read all of the singer'' prerecorded remarks at the virtual ceremony.
I am so grateful to be a part of the New Jersey Hall of Fame, she said, her bright pink lipstick and striped blouse picking up the blush hues on her nails and the roses behind her. It means a lot to me.
And Im going to get my gitchi ya-yo da-das by telling you that if it werent for Patti LaBelle, the Bluebelles, and Labelle, I wouldn t be sitting here tonight. Studying music has been a very important part of my life. Trenton is a city of more than just music and arts.
Dash joined LaBelle and Nona Hendryx, her Bluebelles and Labelle group mates, and they performed a snippet from the opening of Lady Marmalade, the 1974 hit that put them on the rise and in the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Dash was 76 when she died on September 20, months after she was inducted into the state hall of fame. Her memorial service on Oct. 2 was livestreamed on the New Jersey Hall of Fame YouTube page.
It was comforting to know that at least Sarah knew how much she was loved and respected by the New Jersey Hall of Fame, the state of New York, and her beloved hometown, Trenton, according to Steve Edwards, president of the hall of fames board of trustees.
LaBelle, standing next to Hendryx both 77 - shared the groups nickname for Dash Little Inch.
Thats what we called her back in the day because she was shorter than both of us, she said. The most beautiful high voice Ive ever heard angelic.
I learned a lot from Sarah Dash, LaBelle said. Thank you, Sarah, for teaching me, he added.
Sarah is very generous and shes always helping the youth in New Jersey, Hendryx said.
She said she never would have joined a local group if it wasn't for Dash, who heard her singing in church.
That is why I sit here today with Patti LaBelle, she said.
Dash joined the band as a solo artist in 1977, and recorded the smash-hit 1978 song Sinner Man. She often collaborated with Keith Richards and The Rolling Stones.
Richards, also 77, shared a message for Dashs hall of fame induction before her death. Steve Jordan, the drummer for the Stones, was also there.
Richards added that New Jersey should be congratulated for recognizing their own talent.
Terry Jones, Carol Riddick, and Helen Bruner, all members of the Recording Academys Philadelphia chapter, paid yet another tribute to Dash in a performance of Sinner Man.
A number of famous faces introduced and assisted inducting the newest class of the New Jersey Hall of Fame at the halls 13th induction ceremony (and second virtual ceremony).
