Former Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs general manager Theo Epstein is already out of the running to become the Mets' next president of baseball operations. It looks like the teams two other big-name targets won't be visiting New York either.

According to a report from SNY, the Mets are unlikely to be allowed to meet with Oakland Athletics president Billy Beane or Milwaukee Brewers President David Stearns for the job. Both are still in contract with their respective teams until 2022.

As a result, SNY reported, the Mets are likely to consider other possible candidates for the position of general manager or president of baseball operations.

The Mets are likely to land either Beane or Stearns, according to MLB Networks Jon Heyman.

Mets chances to land Stearns appear to be slim, Heyman tweeted. Hes on a 22 contract, and the Crew may have an extra year of options if they want to keep him. No official word on Beane, but no encouraging signs. Short list may need to be expanded.

The Mets havent been formally barred from interviewing Stearns or Beane, but if they did, they would be eliminated as candidates for the teams president of baseball operations position this winter.

The Mets will need to fill several coaching and front office jobs in the coming weeks and months, including the role of President of baseball operations. After letting go of manager Luis Rojas and most of his coaching staff, all of those positions will have to be filled. The Mets also need to decide on the future of acting general manager Zack Scott, who is on administrative leave following a drunk driving arrest in August.
