Mike Tomlin isnt getting ahead of himself.

Yes, the Pittsburgh Steelers seemed to make progress and plenty of it in a 27-19 win over Denver on Sunday. Behind an offensive line that for the first time didnt look overwhelmed, the leagues worst running game gained traction. The defense controlled for three quarters and did just enough in the fourth to end a three-game losing streak. The chunk plays codes for huge gains that dont necessitate the offense to take extended drives returned.

Tomlin is well aware that 60 minutes of skill doesn't necessarily imply that everything is fine. The Steelers are still under.500 (2-3). The work of digging out of the early hole they dug for themselves is just beginning.

While everyone from quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to rookie running back Najee Harris credited the line for taking what appeared to be a huge step forward, their head coach is nowhere near ready to say that the unit has arrived.

Tomlin said, The time will tell that story.

Yes, but for the first time in 2021, the Steelers showed extended glimpses of what first-year offensive coordinator Matt Canadas attack is supposed to look like: a massive helping of Harris whose 23 carries were the most by statewide running back in nearly two years - some clever misdirection, and boozed vintage Roethlisberger.

Roethlisberger, 39, and his coaches spent last week fending off doubts about whether he can still play at an elite level. He proved to the Broncos that he can fight them at the right moment.

Denver sacked Roethlisberger once and that was more of a coverage sack than merely weakened defense -- and hit him just twice. Right tackle Chuks Okorafor handled Broncos star outside linebacker Von Miller, and when Miller dropped into coverage, Roethlisberger exploited him by finding wide receiver Chase Claypool for a 59-yard catch-and-run that set up Corey Harris' 1-yard touchdown dive.

Claypool finished with five receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown. The catch came from wide receiver Diontae Johnson, who caught a long scoring pass on Pittsburghs opening possession for the second consecutive week as Roethlisberger finished 15 of 25 for 253 yards.

Running a game that may now be gaining momentum helped. Harris ability to smother the Broncos forced Denver to crowd the line of crimmage, giving Roethlisberger favorable one-on-one matches down the field.

I felt like I could sit back there and slide and go to second, third, or fourth reads at times, Roethlisberger said. Im proud of the way the guys played and fought today, as I said. We asked the line this week to be better in the pass game, be stronger in run game and, honestly, I thought they met the challenge.
