The UN Has Warned Israel Of The Dire Consequences Of Annexing The Palestinian Territories
The annexation of Palestinian territories is illegal, and Israel should abandon such plans, UN High Commissioner for human rights Michelle Bachelet said in Geneva on Monday. She stressed that the annexation is fraught with disastrous consequences for the Palestinians, Israel, and the region as a whole.
"The annexation is illegal, "Bachelet said, calling on Israel to"listen to its former senior officials and generals, as well as to the many voices in the world warning against taking this dangerous road."
"The exact consequences of annexation cannot be predicted," the High Commissioner stated. "But they are likely to be disastrous for the Palestinians, for Israel, and the wider region." According to Bachelet, the annexation attempt "will not only cause serious damage to efforts to establish long-term peace in the region but will most likely perpetuate and exacerbate the serious human rights violations that have characterized the conflict for decades." It warned that the annexation "will not change the responsibilities of Israel as the occupying power towards the population under occupation, following International Humanitarian Human Rights Law."
On May 17, before the swearing-in ceremony of the 35th government of Israel, which is formed following the elections on March 2, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed the opinion that the time has come to Annex the Jewish settlements in the West Bank and the Jordan valley. The coalition agreement allows the head of government to begin implementing steps to extend sovereignty to parts of the West Bank according to the plan of US President Donald Trump from July 1. On May 25, Netanyahu confirmed that he intends to begin implementing steps to Annex parts of the West Bank in July.
