The Florida Panthers are set to face the Pittsburgh Penguins on day three of the new NHL season, a division champion from last season being their season against arguably fewer players than they were before.

Last season, with the COVID-adjusted realignment, the Florida Panthers were one of the best teams in the regular season and placed second in Division C. After a long and difficult series against the eventual Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning, the Panthers bowed out in the first round. They've now got a slightly revamped roster, with the intention of moving up to the top of the Atlantic Division.

Pittsburgh had a difficult opening series against their division rivals the New York Islanders, also losing in the first round of the playoffs last season. Sidney Crosby is recovering from surgery day-to-day, while Evgeni Malkin is out indefinitely, also recovering after surgery. They now look to bounce back with a slightly older roster, missing two of their stars at the beginning of the season, with captain Siddy Malkins out for the entire season while captain Evan Malin is inactive for indeterminate reasons.

While the two teams did not play last season due to their respective schedules which saw them only play division teams, they met three times during the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season, with the Panthers winning two of the three meetings.
