For Purcell, the winning ways continue
Last week was not my best week, but it was by no means my worst. My overall record is still 87-33, which Im happy with, having gone 11-5 with my picks last week. As a final note, I'd like to thank Troy for beating rival Troy Athens, 21-20, last week because it was the exact score I had envisioned for that game. It always feels good to be able to get one right on the nose.
Nevertheless, Week 8 of the regular season is upon us, which is a bit hard to believe. Comparative to the start-stop craziness of last fall, this season has flown by quite a bit. Its already time to declare the PSL champions, which will be a rematch between Detroit King and Cass Tech.
If youd like to see a particular game highlighted in Purcells Picks, email your suggestion to firstname.lastname@example.org and share your prediction. In the near future, Ill include some picks based on reader suggestions.
Detroit Cass Tech (5-2) vs Detroit Martin Luther King (6-1), 7:30 PM @ Detroit Collegiate Prep, Detroit, Michigan.
This is the PSL Division 1 championship game and it's a rematch of the Week 3 classic between these two teams. King won the back-and-forth matchup 41-34. Both teams have great quarterbacks and underrated running backs who can fight for extra yards. The bizarre thing about this matchup is that since the first match up between the two, both teams have missed two games because of opponent forfeits. Due to COVID, Cass Tech also played another game without 40 players. Since its loss to King, Cass Tech has only played one game with its full roster.
King 28, Cass Tech 21, PURCELLS PICK: King 28
Warren De La Salle Collegiate (6-0) vs Harper Woods (6-1), 7:00 PM, Warren de La Sa Salle College (5-0)
De La Salle is already the Catholic High School League Central Division champion, and its just looking to add to its resume. Harper Woods has a great offense led by running back Christion Stokes and wide receiver Tayshawn Trent. Brady Drogosh, who is one of the state's best mobile quarterbacks, joins De La Salle in the fight. Will Beesley leads a tough defense for the Pilots as well.
PURCELLS PICK: De La Salle 21, Harper Woods 16,
Traverse City Central (6-1) vs Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice (5-2), 7:00 PM, Travers City City (5-2) versus Bloomington Hills Brothers Rice (5-2),
Brother Rice will have to make a long journey to complete. They are hoping that their ride home will not take longer than it should. Traverse City Central has one of the best offenses in all of Michigan, averaging 45.8 points per game. Brother Rice, on the other hand, is likely the most battle-tested team Central will face this year. Brother Rice must fight against Notre Dame commit Josh Burnham at all costs because he is a rare quarterback and linebacker.
Brother Rice 31, Traverse City Central 28, is the PURCELLS PICK.
Detroit Central (7-0) vs Detroit Pershing (5-2), 5 PM
This is the PSL Division 2 championship, meaning it's the battle for small-school supremacy in Detroit. Central hasn't played in the last two weeks because of opponent forfeits, so it'll be in awe. Centrals offense, spearheaded by QB David Williams, is difficult to contain.
Central 27, Pershing 20, Persshing 20
Berkley (6-1) vs Troy (7-0), 7:00 PM, Berlley (7-1); Troy (8-2)
This is a crucial matchup in the OAA Blue race. Berkley must win to keep its title hopes alive. Since sharing the OAA II title in 1999, it hasnt won a league championship. Troy has the No. 1 defense in the OAA Blue, giving up just 39 points all season, and Berkley has scored more than 30 points in four straight games.
Berkley 17, Troy 14, PURCELLS PICK: Berkenley 17
