Michigan coaches visited prospects during bye week to look for candidates for the Wolverines' recruiting report

The programs stability, given that Michigan s football team is coming off a 2-4 season, was the recruiters' primary concern heading into 2021.

Jim Harbaugh took a pay cut in the offseason and restructured his coaching staff with six new assistants. Mike Macdonald, the new defensive coordinator, was an unknown commodity, having never held that position before in his career.

But a 6-0 start has changed the narrative. The Wolverines are a top-10 team in the country, while their offense, under Macdonalds new administration, ranks among the top-25 in points and yards allowed.

The teams dazzling start hasnt averted any new headliner commitments thus far, but it has helped calm worries about the program future.

Brice Marich of The Michigan Insider said MLive that I think it is great because, the great thing, they are coming off a 2-4 season. A lot of children, they committed to a program where the head coach took remuneration cuts, he added. There was a lot of uncertainty. There was a lot of, What is going to happen?' Hows the team going to look?

People were expecting a 6-6 game. They werent even certain they would make a bowl. Youre now 6-0, youve risen to the top 10, people are happy. There is a lot of interest in recruiting. The most important result of this is stability. I think recruiters, recruits coaches, parents, they feel like OK, Michigan is now on a solid footing. Well know who is going to be there if we do decide to go to Michigan.

Coaches who devote so much time to training for a weeks opponent may find it difficult to allocate significant time for recruiting during the slog of .

But with the Wolverines on a whim this week, coaches are out on the recruiting trail getting first-hand details on their commits and top targets.

Its a great opportunity to spend more time than I normally would in tv week catching up, whether it be watching tape, evaluating players, Harbaugh said. Theres the (class of 2022) and then therere the 23s. Theres always so much to discover. It is a full-time job for our recruiting coordinator, but its also incredibly rewarding for me as well.

Number one thing that makes recruiting easier than winning, he added. So we keep a lot of emphasis on that. But, Id like to see some more hours in the day to allow me to concentrate and concentrate on recruiting young people to the great state of Michigan and specifically the University of Detroit.

It is currently an evaluation period on the recruiting calendar, meaning coaches can observe recruits play live, but they arent allowed to interact with them in person.

Lander Barton, a four-star linebacker target for 2022, was in Salt Lake City, Utah on Wednesday to watch Harbaugh and Macdonald play with four stars. Josh Conerly, a five-star offensive tackle target in Seattle Rainer Beach, is among the other recruits the coaching staff is expected to see this week. Mason Graham, Concord (Calif.) is a three-star defensive lineman at Servite. Zeke Berry, Zekes Berry's De La Salle three-star cornerback target, Colston Loveland' s Gooding (Idaho) three star tight end commit, and Lawndale (Calif.) Kevonte Henry, Kevorta Henry's three-star linebacker commit, Amorion Walker'' Amoron' Walker, and Amarion Watkins, a three star receiver target in Ponchatoula (La.), and Baton Rouge (L.) Austin Ausberry, a four-star cornerback at the University Lab, is rumored to be Austin's four star corner back target.

The big thing is showing face and getting out to these recruits, to those commits and letting them know, Hey, we are still thinking of you, Marich said. Jim Harbaugh, Josh Gattis, Macdonald will be seen at your game as a high school prospect, and the fans, the parents, all these people are going to see Jim Harrig, (offensive coordinator), Josh Gaatti, that is incredibly important.

While many current players wont be out on the field this week, some will be ready to make a few recruiting pitches of their own.

Im always willing to help in any way I can, Michigan freshman quarterback J.J. McCarthy said Tuesday. I know how important that is to a successful football team. You need the right guys in the program to win the games we need to lose. Im gonna do whatever they ask and talk to whoever I need to talk with and tell them straight away that they must come here. Michigans recruitment process isnt too difficult.
