Suspect injured in church parking lot shootout with Sylacauga police

After a brief exchange of gunfire with police in Sylacauga, he was injured, police said.

The shooting took place about 5:30 p.m. No officers were hurt.

Chief Kelley Johnson said he doesn't know the nature of the call to which police responded, but that they encountered the suspect on South Broadway Avenue.

The suspect fled from them, and a foot chase ensued, which ended in the parking lot of First Baptist Church. Johnson said the suspect fired on officers and the officers responded by firing at them at some point.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, was struck and is now being treated at UAB Hospital in Birmingham. The extent of the injury wasnt immediately known.

The State Bureau of Investigation will lead the investigation.
