HOW TO PLAY THE NFL ONLINE: A COMPLETE 2021 GUIDE
The Philadelphia Eagles believe in what they call the Dawg Mentality, and that motto embodied their 21-18 come-from-behind victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
The offense couldnt move the ball and the game looked pretty dull for most of the first three quarters.
The Eagles, on the other hand, didnt panic, relying on their defense and special teams until Jalen Hurts and the offense finally came back from a 12-point deficit to end o 'three-game losing streak.
When one unit is down, the other units have to bring it up, Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said. The defense I felt like was up all game. Right? They certainly did. They had a great game. Special teams was down a little bit early, but they come back and make ice hockey. The offense was down, but they gutted it out in the second half and then they make some plays.
It was, as Sirianni put it, the very definition of a team victory.
Sirianni said the offense wasnt performing well for a long time during that game, and thats what were talking about with Dawg Mentality. When they had to make plays at the end when it was still tight, they did so while it remained tight. They made the plays that we needed to make there. Everybody in there should be happy.
T.J. Edwards, notably.
Edwards pulled off a stunt at the line of scrimmage and ran into the box to block Joe Charltons punt with four minutes remaining and the Eagles trailing 18-13. Shaun Bradley might have had a chance to scoop and score but instead fell on the ball at the Carolina 27.
As Carolina linebacker Haason Reddick put it, it changed the momentum of the game.
Edwards said the Eagles were anticipating a certain look from the Panthers punt protection unit, and when they saw it, they went for the block.
Edwards said that in one of his earlier rushes, they gave us kind of the same look and we just changed a couple things up and got us home.
Carolinas defense didnt respond well to the sudden change, as Hurts found Dallas Goedert for a 20-yard completion on second down to set up 'first-and-goal' at the Carolina 6. Two plays later, Hurts faked a handoff and kept the ball on 'zone-read' option, essentially jogging into the end zone for the score and the Eagles' first lead of the game.
Sam Darnolds pass to Steven Nelson in midfield gave the Eagles the final touch, allowing them to run out the clock. It was Philadelphias third sack of the game, following a day in which they had Darnold on the run.
That guy (wide receiver Robby Anderson) had been lining up in that formation all day, Nelson said. I just kind of read the play before it even began and made the film, he added.
Edwards said there was no panic when the Eagles entered the locker room trailing 15-6.
The biggest thing is guys hunkered down, Edwards said.
Hurts added, I always say never get too high or never go too low. Whether its good or bad, you can flush it off and leave it behind and move forward. Its all about the ability to overcome.
The Eagles tumultuous run may be over, but a new challenge awaits them on Thursday night when they host the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-1).
Hurts stated before that he believes in this football team, that I believe in the football club and everyone else here. We just need to keep growing. We dont change the process for the moment. We must get one percent better each day and keep going.
