Portland Trail Blazers were listless in their preseason loss to the Phoenix Suns, 119-74: Game rewind
The Portland Trail Blazers' disappointing preseason continued Wednesday afternoon with a 119-74 loss at Phoenix.
After three lopsided defeats, the Blazers are now 0-3.
Chauncey Billups, Blazers coach, said it was a horrible effort, I thought, by us."
Of course, none of these games matter much, and its difficult to assess what any of the defeats really mean given that starters arent playing big minutes and some have been in and out of their lineups.
However, in any of the three games, there has been little evidence that the new offensive and defensive methods employed by Billups have taken hold. That said, there wont be many nights this season when the Blazers shoot 29.8% from the field and go 6 of 39 on threes (15.4%) as they did Wednesday.
The Suns, who finished their preseason 3-1, shot 49.5% from the field and 39% on threes.
Billups stated, We just didnt stop anything. Their offense produced a lot of open threes, says Meier.
WHAT IT SEEMS.
The Blazers have lost three preseason games by a combined score of 347-274.
WAS IT OVER WHEN IT WASN'T?
The game got off to a bad start for the Blazers, who trailed 23-11 at the end of the first quarter after making 3 of 19 shots and missing all nine three-point attempts.
Portland trailed 59-40 at halftime, and things worsene in the third quarter, which ended with the Blazers down 93-60.
I think it demonstrated that we arent there yet, Lillard said. Were still a work in progress, he added.
SHOWED UP AND SHOOTED OUT, SHOVED DOWN AND SHOWN OFF.
Not a single Blazers player performed significantly well. Jusuf Nurkic, center, scored eight points with 13 rebounds, but committed five fouls, four of them offensive, and turned the ball over four times in just under 21 minutes.
Devin Booker led Phoenix, which was without Chris Paul, with 17 points, all coming in the first half.
SHOWED UP AND FIZZLED, NOW AVAILABLE TO BE FAZLED OFF.
Portland had a long list. However, lets stick to the team s top two stars in this list.
CJ McCollum only made 3 of 14 shots and 2 of 7 threes. He scored 10 points in 24 minutes to finish the day.
Damian Lillard scored 12 points in 23 minutes and shot well from the field (5 of 11), but made just 1 of 6.
The Blazers made 21 turnovers. Thats an improvement over the 27 they committed Monday in a loss to Sacramento and the 26 they coughed up in the preseason opener against Golden State, both ludicrous. The Blazers led the NBA in turnovers per game last season with an average of 11.1.
I didnt think we were focused at all on either side of the ball today, Billups said.
The game was moved from 7 p.m. to 2 a.M. due to the earlier start time for Game 2 of the WNBA Finals between the Chicago Sky and Phoenix Mercury.
Billups said before the Blazers-Suns game that his team had adjusted flight arrangements so that it could stay at the arena to watch the game before heading to San Francisco to face Golden State on Friday.
UP TO THE NEXT DOWN!
The Blazers will host their final preseason game at 7 p.m. Golden State will host Golden Friday.
