Phoenix preview, time, TV channel, and location: Damian Lillard expects to play in at least one of his final 2 preseason games

Damian Lillard, the guard for the Portland Trail Blazers, took Monday night off to get some rest after what he described as a long week of practice.

Following Tuesdays workout, he said, "Up and down, defensive drills conditioning, doing a lot of stuff like that."

Lillard, 31, said he would have felt good playing in Monday nights 107-93 loss to Sacramento at the Moda Center given that if a preseason game were ahead, it is typical for him to miss dozens of games.

The Blazers will play their final two preseason games at 2 p.m. Lillard hopes to play at least one of the two games on Wednesday at Phoenix, followed by a 7 p.m. game Friday at Golden State. One thing he and the team wont do is overthink trying to win a preseason game. The regular season kicks off a week from Wednesday and the Blazers are 0-2 with two lopsided defeats.

I think you try to get a game in when you play fewer minutes, Lillard said. Ive seen teams play guys all the time in the preseason. Ive usually played two games in the preseason, sometimes three, and one 30-plus minute game. But I stayed all summer. Im in good shape. Even in the very first game against Golden State, I felt well. I felt comfortable. I feel like weve gotten to the point where, its not like the preseason isnt necessary, but I don think we need to go out there and try and show that we can win a game.

A recurring issue for Lillard in the past has been that he has abdominal pain that typically begins during training camp before subsiding. Last year, the strain began early in the regular season. Lillard said his abdomen tightened up during training camp, but it wasnt too painful. He sat out a day and he felt relief after surviving for ten days.

Ive been good ever since, Lillard said.

Lillard, who played for USA Basketball in the Tokyo Summer Olympics, said he has been training his body ever since, including doing pilates, and that has helped.

Winning Wednesday or Friday at Golden State will most likely be determined by availability. The Blazers had eight players in their 2-2 draw against the Kings. Lillard, Robert Covington (rest), CJ McCollum (right ankle sprain), Norman Powell (left hip strain), Ben McLemore ( left ankle injury), Tony Snell ( right foot strained), or Nassir Little (just hamstring strain) or Cody Zeller (nose fracture) didnt play.

The team released its injury report Tuesday evening, and it appears that several players will return to action.

McCollum, Powell, and McLemore are all considered probable. However, Anfernee Simons (right thumb strain) is questioned. Snell, Little, and Zeller will not be playing.

DENNIS SMITH JR.

After two solid performances in the preseason and a strong showing during training camp, Guard Dennis Smith Jr. appears to be the front-runner to earn the teams 14th roster spot.

Chauncey Billups, the Blazers' coach, said following Smith's 18-point performance Monday against Sacramento, that the former lottery pick has performed well and is doing exactly what is being asked of him.
