Vote for Saginaw-area Fall Sports Athlete of the Week (Oct. 4-9)

The Michigan high school fall sports season is beginning with state finals for girls golf and boys tennis on Friday and Saturday.

Michigans high school athletes are reaching their highest levels for the championships, and more state finals are on the way.

Fans may vote for their favorite Saginaw-area fall athlete, as determined by their coaches, for the Athlete of the Week award. The poll is open until 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18, at 1:05 p.m.

Millington volleyball player Haley Cain, Milltown volleyball star Hazel Caine,

Haley Cain played a key role in Millingtons volleyball team's success, contributing to her team spiffing success. Cain had seven digs and seven kills in a 3-0 victory over Otisville-LakeVille. She added 19 digs and 12 kills in a 3-1 win over Michigan Lutheran Seminary. Millington closed the week at the Caro Invitational, where the Cardinals posted a 3-1-1 record, falling to Swan Valley in the final. Cain had 16 digs and 16 kills for the day.

Aydan Dalak, Reese volleyball, Adan Dalak.

Aydan Dalak led Reese to a 25-4, 25-10, and 25-9 victory over Laker High in an emotional match that also included parents night. Aydan had 13 kills, 25 assists, and two aces for the Rockets against Laker. Dalak added 35 assists, seven kills, and five aces in 3-0 victory over Vassar.

Giorgio Fabiano, Nouvel boys tennis, Giovani fabiano.

Giorgio Fabiano claimed the No. 2 singles regional championship, helping Saginaw Nouvel claim a Division 4 boys tennis regional. Fabiano defeated Brent Miller from Chesaning 6-1, 6-2, and Connor Lyman from Essexville Garber 7-5, 6-1, to complete a 7-0, 5-1 win over Freddie Rocco from Feltham. Simon Haubenstricker from Frankenmuth claimed the title with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Fabiano.

Frankenmuth claimed first place in the TVC East volleyball standings with a 3-0 win over Essexville Garber. Audrey Geer led the way with 15 kills and 16 digs.

Midland Dow boys tennis player Austin King, Midland King

Midland Dow won its 13th consecutive regional title, taking the No. 1 singles flight for the Chargers, who won every flight. Austin King led Midlanddow to its first regional championship in 13 years, winning the no.1 single flight with the team. King opened with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Mount Pleasants Alex Huang, and then beat Heritage Jefferson Afante, 6-1, 7-1. King defeated Traverse City Centrals Tanner Cooley, 6-3, 6-1, in the regional final.

Allie Maize helped Freeland beat Saginaw Nouvel and Swan Valley in their week-long matches. The junior outside hitter had 19 kills, 14 digs and three aces in the two matches.

Alex Price, Midland Dow volleyball,

Midland Dow improved to 13-11-4 with a 3-0 victory over Bay City Western. Alex Price had a solid overall performance with 13 assists, 10 digs, and one block.

Averie Pumford, Freeland girls golf, Avererie, PUMFORD,

Averie Pumford, a freshman, scored an 81 in the Division 3 girls golf regional at Pine River Golf Course in Alma. Freeland finished second with a 400 following Pumfords effort.

Mary Richmond, Frankenmuth girls cross country, Mary Virginia,

Mary Richmond continues to impress during her sophomore season. In 18:09.93, she claimed first place in the Greater Flint Cross Country Championships, winning the 5,000-meter race. Frankenmuth finished eighth, with Grand Blanc taking the team title.

Alexys Rodriguez, St. Louis, Alex Rodriguez Rodriguez

Alexys Rodriguez had 33 assists in a five-set loss to Saginaw Nouvel, with the Sharks losing 19-25, 25-19, 25, 25-23, 18-25, 10-15, and 18-24. Rodriguez also had 15 digs and five kills for St. Louis.

Midland Dow girls golfer Abby Wilson

Abby Wilson earned medalist honors in the Division 2 girls golf regional at Saginaw Valley Public Golf Course. Wilson, a junior, shot an 85 to finish first as an individual and lead Dow to olympics with 375.
