Qatar's foreign minister says there is no clear path for releasing Afghan funds

Qatar's foreign minister said at a conference on Wednesday that there was no clear path to freezing Afghan government funds, highlighting the economic strains facing Afghanistan under its new Taliban commanders.

Qatar is hosting talks between the Taliban and Western officials and is thought to have influence over the Afghan movement.

Much of the Afghan central bank's $10 billion in assets are stored overseas.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatar's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister, reiterated Qatari' stance that recognising the Taliban government is not currently a priority, but that international engagement is crucial.
