When Ian Russell's daughter died in 2017, the tragic father went to the teenager'' social media accounts to seek for answers.

Molly, 14, was 14 when Russell discovered that she saw graphic content about self-harm, including memes encouraging suicide, as she viewed video. The images were spotted on popular social and image sharing sites such as Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, and Pinterest.

Since Molly's death, Russell has urged social media companies to do more to address content promoting self harm and suicide, which he claims contributed to his daughter'' s die. The UK resident has called on social media firms to provide information to researchers to assess the potential dangers of this type of material, as well as to push for government regulation.

"As time passes, it's becoming my belief that platforms don't really know what to do, so they move when pushed to accomplish something," Russell stated. "It's often a PR exercise."

Pressure like Russell's rises in the wake of a series of recent stories in The Wall Street Journal claiming that Facebook, the world' s biggest social network, is aware of the harm its services can inflict on users' mental health, but that it minimizes the risks of its service in public. One internal Instagram study cited by the Journal revealed that 13 percent of British users and 6 percent in American users attributed the desire to Instagram because of an internal survey commissioned by The Journal.

Facebook has disputed the Journal stories, stating that the paper mischaracterized the company's research and that teenagers have positive experiences on social media, and had its own research into the issue. The business announced on Monday that it would pause the development of a children's version of Instagram.

Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and Pinterest all have restrictions limiting the promotion or encouragement of suicide and self-harm, as well as redirecting users to suicide prevention resources. These sites, on the other hand, believe they don't want to detain individuals from sharing their mental health problems or obtaining assistance.

"While we don't allow people to intentionally or unintentionally celebrate or promote suicide or self-injury, we do allow individuals to discuss these topics because we want Facebook to be a place where people can share their experiences, raise awareness about these issues, and seek support from one another," Facebook's community standards states.

Some of these sites block or limit searches for self-harm or suicide, whereas others warn users about looking at suicide-related material. Certain platforms are more aggressive than others in terms of moderating harmful content.

Despite this, the types of images that Russell and other parents are anxious about can be found on-line.

Researchers say there's no easy fix, such as limiting keywords.

"It's not a matter of limiting some searches," Jeanine Guidry, an assistant professor at Virginia Commonwealth University who has studied suicide content on Instagram and Pinterest, said. Despite the fact that the sites have made progress in recent years, Guidry claims that "if you dig a little further, you see these messages."

Instagram hides posts for #selfharm and directs users to support resources. However, self-harm images have surfaced in search results for #suicide, which users may view if they click through a warning. "Posts with the words you're searching for often encourage behavior that may cause harm and even lead to death," the prompt cautions.

Mental health support resources are some of the outcomes for suicide content that may discourage people from taking their lives, or they are a few of them. Other posts alleged to violate Instagram's rules against promoting and encouraging suicide. Instagram said in 2019, it would ban fictional self-harm or suicide material, including memes and illustrations.

However, this type of material popped up in search results for suicide material. For at least two weeks, Instagram banned the user from posting more than 170 illustrations showing self-harm and illustrating suicide methods. Instagram stated it restricted the account from streaming live video, but it later removed it completely for continued violations.

The images CNET spotted represent a slew of online suicide and self-harm material. Companies in the field of technology also use artificial intelligence to identify and conceal self-harm material before a user reports it. However, not all platforms, in particular, restrict self-harm and suicide material from obtaining results.

Twitter bans self-harm or suicide content, but it will still allow self image enhancements as long as they're marked as sensitive media, which users must confirm. The user is expected to identify sensitive content, but Twitter will do so if the tweet is reported. Self-harm content doesn't block results, unlike in other social networks. The social network appears to enforce its policies inconsistently. The results for self-harm, with some of which aren't marked as sensitive, show up with graphic snaps of cuts. TikTok, the short-form video app, has also struggled to handle suicide material. A video of a man murdering himself, which originated from Facebook, went viral in 2020 on the platform. TikTok attributed the spread of the video to a "coordinated raid from the dark web" in which users modified the footage in various ways so it would escape the platform's automated detection. Even if users aren't searching for it, the incident was a shocking example of suicide material surfacing on social media.

When a user searches for self-harm material, TikTok provides support resources. Searches for suicide include resources, but they also include the option to view results. Users are advised that "this material may not be appropriate for certain viewers." Videos on suicide prevention or awareness were included in the results.

Despite this, TikTokers have used other hashtags or language to talk about suicide, making it harder to moderate this material. @justasadgirl_, an anonymous account, posted several videos about depression, self-harm, and the urge to kill herself. The user was identified as a 16-year-old girl in the profile. TikTok "depicted, promote, normalize, or glorified activities that could lead to suicide, self-harm, and eating disorders," was removed from the account because it violated its regulations against "discriminating, promoting, legalizing,, ou glorifying activities" that may lead zu suicides, eating difficulties, as well as self harm. TikTok users had to use a sound to indicate where on their body they had harmed themselves, which was also removed from the company's notice.

Pinterest includes exercises to cope with feelings of sadness, as well as the number for the National Suicide Prevention Hotline. Results for suicide and self-harm aren't shown. However, a search for depression made recommendations for more sad images, such as people crying, and included suicide images. Users can turn off suggestions for certain pins, which are bookmarks used to store images, videos, or other material, according to Pinterest.

Pinterest has reported an almost 80 percent drop in self-harm material reports since April 2019, thanks to AI.
