Belarusian KGB officers have detained 50 people on suspicion of insulting a government official or inciting social hatred, following tenth anniversary of tampering in which an IT worker and burgeoning KBG officer died, according to the Viasna-96 human rights group on Thursday.

"As the rights group states, the arrests are connected to comments posted on social media about Andrei Zeltser's death and a KGB officer," the group said. The interior ministry was not immediately asked to make any comments.

According to Belarusian authorities, KGB officers shot dead a 31-year-old man on Tuesday after he reluctantly refused to cooperate with police. They did not verify his identity or media claims that the man may have been a US citizen. read more
