TOKYO, September 30, Tokyo was gearing for Typhoon Mindulle's approach as the storm swept northeast, indicating that the Japanese capital would be hit by high winds and heavy rain by Friday morning.

Mindulle, a Korean word for "dandelion," was briefly thrown into category 5 as it travels towards Japan at -20 km an hour (12 miles anhour). When it is next to Tokyo early on Friday, it's still a Category 2 storm.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, rainfall in Tokyo could be of 10 to 15 cm (4-6 inches) in the 24 hours up to Oct. 2, albeit the brunt of the storm is likely to be felt in Izu peninsula west of capital.

Authorities warned of possible transportation snarls, especially on Friday morning, in addition to the warning.
