In Tears of the Kingdom, upgrading the Master Sword is a lot less complicated than in Breath of the Wild, where you had to complete wave-based Trial of the Sword challenges in order to do so (through the Master Trials DLC).
Fusing weapons with different materials gives your weapon the attributes associated with that substance, which is one of the game's main features. Once the Master Sword has been restored to its former glory, it can be fused with a wide variety of materials, each of which provides a unique advantage in terms of damage or other benefits.

For example, putting a Light Dragon's Scale on the sword increases its healing abilities and boosts damage by 16 points. Silver Lynel Saber Horns increase damage by a staggering +25 boost.
Diamonds or Black Boss Bokoblin Horns are the most powerful fusion enhancements. These components will enhance the weapon's durability and provide the best enhancements in the game.
Finally, remember that the Master Sword upgrade option in Breath of the Wild was only available when the game's additional downloadable content was purchased. We may see additional Blue Blade upgrades as downloadable content, though.
