The Detroit Lions draw Lamar Jackson and Baltimore's slew of rushing tackles in Week 3 - a week before the game

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions are off the beaten track with the daunting task of defending former MVP Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens.

Baltimore opened the year on a sour note, losing to the Raiders, but recovered with an impressive win over the Chiefs last week. In the fourth quarter of their 36-35 victory, The Ravens held Kansas City off the scoreboard, intercepting Patrick Mahomes and regaining a fumble in the final frame.

After losing to the San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers, The Lions head into Week 3 at 0-2. Jeff Okudah and Ifeatu Melifonwu are both out of injured reserve for the first two weeks of the year. Detroit's secondary is facing some tough times, with Jeff OKudash und Ifeu Merifunwus landing on injured reserves over the preceding two months of each year. They lost 35-17 to the Packers on Monday Night Football from Green Bay, allowing 21 unanswered points in the second half.

This article will take a look at where both teams stand statistically, then dive into the major players for the Ravens, what oddsmakers are thinking and if these two have ties together.

Players from the Ravens: This Baltimore machine runs through Lamar Jackson. The Ravens quarterback has led the team in rushing with 193 yards, which coincides with him becoming No. 3 on the league-wide charts through two weeks. Jackson, who was not present at the portion of Baltimore's practice open to the public on Thursday, was dealing with a reported stomach bug. Hes expected to play in Detroit.

Jackson showed his game-changing ability last week, running for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter of Baltimores comeback win against the Chiefs last Friday. He made up for it with a couple of well-timed deep shots and his ability to extend plays and make people miss. Coach John Harbaugh has designed this offensive strategy based on Jackson's strengths, focusing on an intricate and unrelenting rushing attack. Jackson works with options-centric looks, even taking the snap out of the pistol formation, maximising his potential in short spaces while giving him the option to pull back or let it rip.

The Ringer recently took a closer look at Jackson and Baltimores rushing attack thatd be worth checking out, highlighting the Ravens lethal ability in their pocket. Jackson has completed 37 of 56 passes for 474 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions throughout two games. He has 193 rush yards with two scores on 28 attempts, with an average of 6.9 yards per rush. According to Pro Football Focus, the quarterback has forced a total of 10 missed tackles this year, with 107 yards on the ground coming after contact. These 10 missed tackles are now fifth in the league, so yeah, a tough task is ahead.

Thats the key for us. Its how do we get them in third-and-long? Its easier said than done, Lions coach Dan Campbell said. I think our offense will have a big part of this if we can find utmost support for these guys and put ostensibly more pressure on them, by getting in some third-and-long, unless we could force them into more well-known passing downs, that will help us. But, with that being said, these guys will be able to do it. They will fight on third-and-8. Theyre not only rolling out like, OK, heres our third-down pass. They will do what they do first and second down, which youve to be careful. You go out there and we're going to run our dime defense and they'll run the read run one more time, man. I believe our offense is equally important to this whole thing as our defense."

While Jackson may change the game in a hurry, its worth noting the wide list of injuries on Baltimore. Running backs J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards were unable to play in the injured reserve, with TyShon Williams taking over, Latavius Murray not far behind, and LeVeon Bell on their practice squad.

Ronnie Stanley and Alejandro Villanueva are stillnt practicing, leaving a hole on the offensive line. Its worth noting that Baltimore shipped offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr. to the Chiefs last year, collaborating with a new-look group in the trenches. Rashod Bateman and Miles Boykin, tight end Nick Boyle, guard Tyre Phillips, linebacker L.J. Fort, cornerbacks Marcus Peters and Jimmy Smith, safety DeShon Elliott, and defensive lineman Brandon Williams are also being treated with injuries.

Marquise Brown, who is attempting an ankle ailment, is the team's leading receiver with 12 catches for 182 yards and two scores. Mark Andrews, the team's talented tight end, has struggled to keep the season going with only eight catches for 77 yards. Veteran Sammy Watkins has been a strong influence on the team's makeshift receiver depth, adding eight receptions for 140 yards.

It's been a little uglier on the defensive side of the ball, with the Ravens uncharacteristically allowing 30-plus points and tens of yardage in each of their first two games. They lost the opener to the Raiders 33-27, passing a whopping 435 yards on 34 completions to Derek Carr. Baltimore then came from behind to beat the Chiefs last week, intercepting Patrick Mahomes and forcing/recovering a fumble in the fourth quarter of its 36-35 victory.

In linebacker Patrick Queen and edge defender Odafe Oweh, Baltimore's defense features some new faces. Marlon Humphrey, the versatile and capable marine, has struggled to start the year with the rest of the defense in the secondary. Humphrey has allowed 11 catches on 18 targets for 127 yards and two touchdowns until this point. Hes one of the better all-around cornerbacks in the league and shouldnt be afraid to stay down for long.

Anytime you can get a safety in this league that can do obscene things, you're playing backer, play safety, cover guys, and all those guys can accomplish that, Lions assistant coach Duce Staley said. Theyre all built the same, so hes just another person they added to the package that makes them elite.

Jared Goff, the last Lions quarterback to encounter the Ravens, was with the Rams while being beat 45-6 as Jackson threw five touchdown passes, running for another 95 yards. Goff was sacked three times by Baltimore's defense on the same day, at 212 passing yards while he was only sacking him three years later.

They, for sure, got after us that night. I wont forget that one, Goff said. I think just their overall physicality, and theyve been doing it for, I dont know, 15 years, since the Ray Lewis regime was there. You've got to be aware of it just how they approach defense and aggressiveness and physicality, as well as the way they try to impose their will on them. Its different than a lot of teams we play. Yeah, there's certainly that mindset that I had that night with what they wanted to do. "That'll be the case with those who wanted it to accomplish," I said that evening.

Line of Betting: The Ravens are among the favorites between 7.5 and eight points by Oddsmakers, with the over/under total at 50 points.
