OpenAI intends to restart the bot's activity in the country over the coming years.
The ChatGPT chatbot has been barred from receiving requests from Italian residents by OpenAI. The restriction was enabled shortly after the Italian authority launched an investigation into ChatGPT.
According to Italian authorities, ChatGPT processes the data of Italian residents unlawfully and does not verify the age of its users. In addition, ChatGPT has been suspected of leaking personal information of some users from Italy.
ChatGPT has begun refunding money to users in Italy who purchased a subscription last month, as well as the renewal of existing subscriptions, temporarily.
The creators of the bot express the hope that they may reclaim the service for Italian users in the message displayed when trying to open ChatGPT from Italy. There is no word on when this will occur.
OpenAI was given 20 days to report on the actions taken to correct the identified flaws by the Italian authorities. ChatGPT developers may be fined up to 20 million euros if they refuse to cooperate with the authorities.
This is an interesting story.
