The metal ball destroying the city was indeed moving around the area; at least some of the explosions were also real.
A very clever point: to keep the ball from falling, a special suspension was utilized (apparently, this design is very light). The sequence with the ball breaking the bus apart isn't CGI, but it was actually shot.
