Johnny is based on a true story. Jan Kaczkowski was a real person from the birth of him in Gdynia, Poland. He was a priest of the Catholic Church and suffered from several health problems from the age of birth, including a severe vision impairment.
He visited many cancer patients, and seeing their agonies inspired him to establish a hospice on wheels. In 2009, he established The Puck Hospice, which he named the saint Padre Pio, an Italian priest famous for his charitable work.
Father Jan has also written several books on living life to the fullest and living with terminal illnesses. One such work is entitled The Art of Living Without Lies.
He was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2012, and was given months to live. He lived four more years and died on March 28, 2016, at the age of 39.
The film also recreates Patryk's entire life. He was raised by an abusive father who died of heroin addiction.
Patryk was sent to work through his issues at the Puck Hospice and met Father Jan. He is now a professional chef and the founder of a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring Jan Kaczkowski.
Maciej Kraszewski, a Polish writer, discovered the film from none other than Patryk himself and was so moved he not only composed it, but also published a book about Jan Kaczkowski in September 2022, titled Johnny. This publication coincided with the theatrical release in Poland.
