We Were Liars is being produced and executive produced by Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie for Prime Video. The streaming service has given a series order to the project, based on the famous young adult novel by E. Lockhart.
Lockhart, an author, will work as an executive producer with Emily Cummins of My So-Called Company.
"We've been following this timeless tale for years, and for a while, it seemed like it would be the one that took us away from Prime Video and UTV." We're also incredibly grateful that the author has joined our creative crew behind the scenes, as avid book lovers ourselves.
Plec's credits include Kyle XY, The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, The Tomorrow People, Containment, Legacies, and Roswell, New Mexico. Her most recent young adult series, Vampire Academy, premiered in September 2022 on Peacock.
Adly MacKenzie partnered with Plec on The Originals and created, produced, and executive produced Roswell, New Mexico, which completed its four-season run in September 2022.

Lockhart is a moving story about family, love, secrets, and lies that is appropriate for Amazon and MGM Studios' Prime Video viewers," says Vernon Sanders, the show's head of television. "We're looking forward to teaming up with these fantastic storytellers, along with Universal Television, to bring this program to life."
Prime Video describes the series as a tragic love story and an amnesia thriller set on a privately owned island off the coast of Massachusetts.
"This spooky psychological mystery from E. Lockhart has everything: first love, bougie family drama, and plot twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat," said Universal Television's Erin Underhill. "With Julie and Carina directing the series, the project couldn't be in better hands."
The Prime Video announcement provided no specifics on when will fans of the bestseller novel will receive casting information.
