The last few seconds during Joel and Ellie's journey for the very first time have sparked debate. However, for those who haven't seen the end of The Last of Us, there's a big spoiler warning for you.
The final scene was largely altered.
The Last of Us (buy now) is a story about violence and dishonesty. Joel rampages and kills anyone who stands in his way to rescue Ellie from death. After rescuing her, he lies about everything he just did and tells her a completely different story about what transpired at the hospital.
After the events, Joel and Ellie confront each other alone before Jackson. When Ellie asks whether everything he told her was true, Joel swears his made-up story is true. And Ellie replies with an ambiguous "Okay" before both the game and the series abruptly conclude and the credits roll...
As Mazin explains in the interview, this strategy would not have altered the ending at all, but it would have added something to it: "Ali Abbasi, our director, played around with this slightly longer and sadder version where Ellie says 'okay' and herself walks away. Joel watches over her. We see the two of them, not really together but separately, walking towards Jackson."
The abrupt conclusion that it finally came to leaves viewers wondering. However, the alternative ending might have had its flaws as well. For example, a stronger hold on the two protagonists might have implyed a growing distrust between Joel and Ellie in the second part.
"Everyone was like, 'What are we going to do?'. And there was this meta-discussion about whether or not the people who played the game would be more upset that they didn't get it the way they wanted, and how will everyone else react to it? "In the end, there's something very specific about ending with this close-up of Ellie. Is she walking away from him, is she walking with him, and how does she feel?"
The conclusion of the second season influenced the outcome.
No one could have imagined that Ellie's story would be repeated in 2013 if not for the sequel. This is when people might be like, 'Oh you left us with a cliffhanger,' knowing that season two will come.
