PC monitor sales decreased by 18.3% in the fourth quarter of 2022, compared to the same time last year, and the decrease in shipments for the whole of 2022 was 5.9%. In the fourth quarter of last year, just over 30.5 million monitors were sold, the lowest level for the fourth quarter since 2008.
The decline was anticipated due to the difficult macroeconomic situation, which exceeded the preliminary prediction by 1.2 percent. Consumer monitors began to decline last year, as did commercial monitors, due to the negative economic forecast in the second half of 2022.
Due to high inventory and weak demand, shipment rates in 2023 are expected to decline again, which will boost shipments above pre-pandemic levels as inventory levels decrease. After 2024, further stabilization is expected due to the shift of many companies to a hybrid approach and an increase in gaming monitor sales.
"In the short run, monitors will remain an afterthought for many buyers," said IDC's head of research. "Annual sales averaged around 125 million before COVID-19 and then jumped to over 135 million over the past three years. Consumers and businesses are reviewing their priorities, but we remain optimistic that most customers will upgrade their monitors in the future."
