Warner's DC Universe in cinema has just begun a complete overhaul, but some superheroes still have a long way to go before the Justice League dissolved. This is the case of Shazam, who will face The Rage of the Gods in March 2023.
A family superhero comedy
Shazam is an exception, even within the DC Universe. It takes only one and unique arm... to have seen the first film released in 2019, and again. It is therefore useless to study the Snyderverse or to dive 20 thousand leagues underwater to discover the kingdom of Atlantis.
The Rage of the Gods is aimed at adults as well as children, with Shazam as a perfect fit for achieving such a huge difference. He thus remains Shazam, fully embraces his adolescent state which is enraged by a body of meta-humans, and to deepen certain themes inherent in the orphan Billy Batson.
The family is unsurprisingly at the heart of the narrative, and plays out as the protagonist's main motivation. Everything revolves around this dysfunctional but oh so loving family unit at times, as the topics covered are universal. Finally, this new stone brought to a DC Universe in full reconstruction fulfills its purpose, even if it means occasionally falling headlong into assumed kitsch. Shazam is smart, and he knows it.
Shazam 2 is honest entertainment in the line of what will be completed in 2023, no more or no less, but puts the heart into the work. Only certain scenes in computer graphics are willing and sometimes helpful to convey the divine dimension of the fight before us.
Redesign of the DC Universe
The Snyderverse is certainly gone. Warner presented the new DC Universe bosses and raised the foundations for future films, series, and video games. James Gunn and Peter Safran then revealed the Justice League and other DC stamped characters' future. Chapter 1 of this new era is called Gods and Monsters, and would begin after The Flash, which is scheduled for release next June.
The Joker sagas with Joaquin Phoenix and The Batman with Robert Pattison belong to another universe... DC Studios' Elseworlds. Here are the lists of movies and series that make up Chapter 1 "Gods and Monsters" of the DC Universe:
