Vincent Freeman (Ethan Hawke), the protagonist of "Gattaca," wants to be in a universe where the gene code of individuals is formed at conception. He then decides to impersonate a man who is impossible to fault with, as such a situation may be fatal.
Gattaca was released in 1997 and was a box office disaster: the film, directed and written by Andrew Niccol, grossed about $13 million on a budget of $36 million. Its sleuthing was inadequate against thrillers such as "I know what you did last summer," "Devil's Advocate" and "kissing girls."
