According to a report from Ampere Analysis, Xbox Series X|S sold 18.5 million units worldwide as of December 31, 2022, as this is unconfirmed data, given that Microsoft has not released official numbers for years.
According to a Pier Harding-Rolls report, Sony claims that 32 million PS5s have been sold worldwide.
According to the market analyst, while inventory concerns have impacted both Xbox and PlayStation sales, Microsoft's consoles have risen in installed volume over the past year, mainly because to the Xbox Series's being much easier to find in stores.
Despite the promotions, the level of interest for the Series S during the holiday season suggests that the console does not have the same appeal as its bigger brother, according to Harding-Rolls.
The Xbox Series X e S is now available.
Given Sony's massive marketing campaign for the console relaunch, an Ampere analyst predicted that the gap with Series X|S will grow further into 2023, or at least until Microsoft's console manufacturing concerns come to an end in the second half of the year.
"PlayStation 5's availability increased towards the end of the year, particularly in the United States, and global equities became much more available in 2023," explained the analyst.
"Ampere anticipates the gap between PlayStation and Xbox unit sales to widen in the first half of 2023, with the Xbox Series X becoming more widespread in the second half of the year."
According to Harding-Rolls, Microsoft's share in the game market, based on sales of hardware, game content, and subscriptions, increased from 27.5 percent in 2021 to 27.3% in 2022, while Sony's increased from 46.3% to 45 percent.
