Square Enix Holdings has announced that its merger with Luminous Productions, a Japanese company well-known for its Luminous Engine, will be combined with Forspoken, which will be released in January on PC and PS5.
Luminous Productions will no longer exist and will merge with Square Enix on May 1, 2023; all employees will be relocated to the publisher's internal studios; no layoffs are anticipated; and Luminous employees will be supported while moving and transitioning internally within Square Enix.
Luminous Productions was established in 2018 with the intention of developing innovative technologies and exceptional AAA games. However, the changing market conditions forced Square Enix to make certain adjustments as part of a move to remain more competitive in an increasingly complex business to manage.
We don't know if Forspoken's likely not too bright performances influenced the game, but its reviews may not have lived up to expectations. No official data has been released yet, but the game rapidly disappeared from the Top 10 charts across the world within weeks of its release.
