The new Microsoft Defender will be installed on Windows 11 and Windows 10 computers that haven't already had it.
The new Microsoft Defender, a cross-platform application that works more like a dashboard on Windows systems, will soon be installed on devices via updates.
When you install and update Microsoft 365 Apps, Microsoft plans to automatically install the new cross-platform Microsoft Defender app on Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices. The app will also provide security tools for family members and identity theft monitoring.
Microsoft is currently offering two Microsoft Defender products for Windows: the built-in Windows Security app with Microsoft Defender Antivirus, and the Microsoft Defender app available to Microsoft 365 subscribers.
Microsoft Defender was previously an optional component of Microsoft 365. Microsoft 365 subscribers may download the app from the Microsoft Store to enjoy additional features.
Microsoft Defender provides three essential features for Microsoft 365 users:
Adding a single dashboard for user devices, stronger password protection for extended family members, and identity theft monitoring.
Personal data leak monitoring is currently only available to subscribers in the United States. Microsoft Defender is also available for Android, iOS, and Mac systems.
Microsoft Defender devices may be managed via the unified dashboard, including family devices.
Features Microsoft Defender and Microsoft Defender Antivirus
Microsoft explains these two services in the following ways:
Both Microsoft Defender products have anti-malware and web protection capabilities. The standalone Defender application in Windows environments works great with other vendors' security packages, according to Microsoft.
Windows devices will receive an automatic installation of Microsoft Defender.
Microsoft is currently sending emails to Microsoft 365 Personal and Microsoft 365 Family subscribers informing them that the Microsoft Defender App will be automatically installed when they install Microsoft 365 Apps. Updating Microsoft 365 Apps may also install the Microsoft Defender App on devices that have it already.
Microsoft states in its letter that silent installation only applies to Windows devices.
From the end of February 2023, Microsoft Defender will be included in your Microsoft 365 installation on Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices. In addition, Microsoft Defender will be sent as an update to devices that already have Microsoft 365 apps installed.
After installing the app, you must log into your account.
Installing apps automatically on user devices is always problematic, especially if users don't have voting rights. According to Redmond's decision, Microsoft Defender will soon be installed on millions of Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices. It's unknown how many Windows users will sign in and begin using the app.
Microsoft 365 subscribers who reside outside the United States or only use one device will not be benefited by the app.
