Following the success of The Best Man: The Final Chapters, Malcolm D. Lee's mind remained the same. Following the series' triumphs at the 2023 NAACP Image Awards, only one question remained: what will follow?
Lee, 53, said she's trying to get a little rest. "And then, 'get in the woodshed' as my father would say, and prepare for the next couple of years so I can prepare myself for more success."
The Best Man: The Final Chapters won the Outstanding Television Film, Limited Series, or Dramatic Special category, while Morris Chestnut and Nia Long, two of the franchise's actors, won for outstanding actor and outstanding supporting actress in a television film, limited series, or dramatic special.
Lee described the VIBE's digital cover story from December 2022, saying he was gratified to finish what began in 1999. Now, after the limited series won its first award, the filmmaker expressed his gratitude for being a part of Black Hollywood's legacy—considering that the nod is for us, by us.
"It's fantastic. It's beautiful. I came here in this business because I wanted to represent us in an authentic and robust manner, and so far, I've been able to do that, and I've been blessed to work with the right studios and networks."
Peacock is the exclusive streaming service for The Best Man: The Final Chapters.
