'Rap Trap: Hip Hop on Trial' is a moving documentary that delves into the infamous criminal case involving rappers Young Thug and Gunna. Several individuals have questioned the validity of such evidence.
What Happened to Young Thug and Gunna?
Jeffery Lamar Williams, better known as Young Thug, is a hip-hop singer, rapper, and songwriter from Atlanta. His music producing company, Young Stoner Life Records, includes Sergio Giavanni Kitchens, also known as Gunna, who has contributed to several songs, such as 'Dollaz On My Head' and 'Take It to Trial.' In April 2015, members of the notorious street band Bloods shot and killed renowned rapper Lil Wayne.
Alvin Lewis, a tour bus driver, was charged with civil assault and battery, causing emotional distress, and others. Following this incident, rumors emerged that YSL was a private club affiliated with the Bloods.
Young Thug was accused of promoting the gang and its illegal activities several times after the shooting on unrelated charges, but things took a different direction on May 9, 2022.
A 56-count indictment includes young Thug, Gunna, and 28 others linked to YSL. The conspiracy charge stemmed from a raid in January 2013, while the gang-related charge was filed for another incident in May 2018.
Young Thug and other artists were accused of promoting the band's activities and demonstrating their loyalty to the Bloods in their music videos. On the other hand, he was also accused of attempting to assassinate rapper YFN Lucci in the Fulton County jail in February 2022.
What Has Happened to Young Thug?
Young Thug was sentenced to a trial at the Fulton County Superior Court in May and August 2022 due to a delay in the selection of jurors. He admitted not guilty to seven felony offenses and another one of gang related activity.
Prosecutors intend to use Young Thug's music videos, song lyrics, and social media posts as evidence to prove that he and other defendants were members of a street band affiliated with the Bloods. According to recent records, the award-winning rapper is currently in jail in Fulton County, awaiting his trial.
What Has Happened to Gunna?
Gunna surrendered himself to the Fulton County police on May 11, 2022, yet the authorities denied him bond thrice because they believed he might harm witnesses and the general public. Following the agreement, he admitted to a single count of conspiracy to violate the RICO Act.
Gunna was sentenced to five years in prison, one year of which was commuted to time served, and the remaining portion of the sentence was suspended as a result of probation conditions, including 500 hours of community service. Despite his involvement in the YSL trial, the rapper was reportedly shunned by the rap community in January 2023.
