Charles Kimbrough, an award-winning actor from 1988 to 1998, died on January 11, 2023 in Culver City, California.

Charles Kimbrough, born on May 23, 1936 in St. Paul, Minnesota, would major in music and theater at Indiana University and later receive a master's degree from the Yale School of Drama. "They shared that belief very strongly," his son said.
Steven Sondheim's Broadway musical featured him.
Charles stayed for a while before settling into New York City's theater scene. After a slew of lesser roles, he made a comeback in the 1970 Broadway production of The Steven Sondheim Musical Company. His work would lead to a Tony nomination and the beginning of a long-running career, which often included him playing aggressive antagonists.
"I'm fortunate to be able to play jackasses of one sort or another," he said of The Wall Street Journal in 2012. "I've always been somewhat self-conscious as an actor, and that sometimes reads as pomposity."
"I somehow gave off an impression at an audition that had them mentally put me in a three-piece outfit or put an attaché case in my hand,' he said. "That wasn't the response I wanted, I was in agony."

Charles would wed Beth Howland, an actress he had met at Yale, almost a decade after his 1991 divorce. Vera was a waitress on the Linda Lavin-led sitcom Alice, which premiered in 1976.

Beth died of lung cancer in 2016 at the age of 76. Charles is survived by a sister, Linda Kimbrough, and a stepdaughter, Holly Howland.
