Ellie asks Joel about his brother because he felt he was going to serve in Operation Desert Storm. They met Tess in Boston and they met Marlene, who sang his song. “He thinks he can save humanity,” Joel replies.

Ellie wonders why he continues on, given that he has no belief in humanity's capacity to change. On the other side of the wreckages, Joel realizes that the highway is clearer than before. And at that point, a guy hobbling on one leg approaches the vehicle and asks for assistance.

Joel and Ellie wait for the patrols to go out before heading to a tall structure four blocks away. He confesses that he feels guilty that Ellie had to rescue him (Ellie had to shoot someone for him because he didn't hear the last guy coming while they wait) and she instructs her to keep it hidden under her coat.

Kathleen and Perry discover an old house where a child grew up; the walls are decorated with superhero images; she is certain the fugitives are nearby. As they reach the top, Ellie asks how he knew the man who stabbed them was an ambush victim. He responds by saying, "It's not necessary to tell her anything."
