Is Dear Edward a true story?
Yes and no. The Dear Edward story is partially related to Airways Flight 771, which resulted in the deaths of 103 passengers and crew, except for Ruben Van Assouw, a 9-year-old boy. Writer Ann Napolitano has stated in several interviews that she wanted to produce the book to help him.
Although the plane collision occurred, the story was told from Napolitano's point of view in order to create this existence for this little boy post-accident.
As the sole survivor of the plane crash, he represents hope and perseverance.
Edward is 12 years old in the book. It's about seeing Edward deal with the grief, the press, and living after the accident.
On May 12, 2010, Afriqiyah Airways Flight 771 was on its way to Libya when it crashed. Every passenger and crew member on the flight died except for a nine-year-old boy who helped him navigate life after the tragedy.
