Morio Kishimoto, Sonic Frontiers' director, believes adding new playable characters is "crucial" for future releases. Three planned updates will be available to all players for free later this year, as well as Sonic himself.
When the Sonic Frontiers DLC was announced, fans were understandably excited, and Kishimoto responded readily, saying, "I think adding more playable characters is an important step in the third generation."
While the term "third generation" may confuse fans, Sonic Team has previously stated that the studio believes Sonic Frontiers to be the beginning of the franchise's "third generation," laying the foundation for the next decade of gaming.
