Peacock's thriller series 'Poker Face' revolves around Charlie Cale, who has the astounding ability to see through anyone's poker face to identify lies one says. The first episode of the series, titled 'Dead Man's Hand,' follows Charlie's meeting with her boss Sterling Frost Jr., who learns all about her special abilities from his retired businessman father. The same goes deadly for everyone involved when she attempts to unravel the mystery surrounding Natalie's death.
Recap of Poker Face 1
Natalie, a housekeeper at Frost Casino, is shocked by seeing Kazimir Caine's laptop screen. She takes a photo of whatever she has seen and sends it to her superior Cliff, who contacts Sterling Frost Jr., the casino's CEO. She knows that she cannot bluff in front of Charlie because she knows that she cannot play private poker.
Sterling instructs Cliff to kill Natalie and her abusive boyfriend Jerry and pin his killing on the deceased partner by posing him with cameras installed by the casino's owner so that Charlie may monitor the game and inform his player about the bluffs. Her best friend Charlie goes to the sheriff's office to learn more about Natalie's death.
How Does Charlie Solve Natalie and Jerry's Murders in Poker Face Episode 1?
Charlie's suspicions about Jerry's death grow because she discovers a tablet in a photograph.
Charlie opens the tablet and sees Natalie's laptop screen. She theorizes that Caine killed Natalie for taking the photo and calls Sterling, who rejects the theory. During their conversation, Charlie realizes that Sterling is hiding "something," and she recalls the day Jerry came to the casino without carrying a pistol. She soon learns that Cliff has taken his gun.
Charlie has worked in Frost Casino enough to understand that Cliff does not move an inch without Sterling's authorization, or whoever takes over the head's office for that matter. Thus, she confronts Sterling and Cliff about the two deaths. Since Sterling knows that lying is futile, he admits to ordering the two murders.
What Causes Sterling Frost Jr. to Kill Himself?
Even when Charlie discovers the truth about Natalie and Jerry's killings, he does not feel threatened. Since Charlie more or less "owns" the county named after his family, Sterling records Sterling's elaborate plot to depose Caine and sends it to the businessman. Caine realizes that he is on enemy land and leaves the establishment.
Sterling's father left the site and handed it over to him, wishing to demonstrate to his father that he is capable of extending his fortune and authority. While growing up, he might have missed the opportunity to escape Caine's shadows, but now that he does, he wants to outdo his father.
Sterling realizes that he and his casino are doomed for the rest of their lives. His father calls him to remind him how awful he is in his second half. He prefers death to death.
Who Is Putting Charlie at Risk?
Charlie realizes that her life is in jeopardy when Sterling Frost Jr. kills himself. Cliff tries to kill her and she succeeds in escaping him. As she runs away from Cliff, the casino boss' father Mr. Sterling calls her to threaten her. He doesn't condone that Charlie's actions jeopardize his son's death.
Charlie paid his son Sterling Jr.'s death and wants to put an end to her life as a vengeance act. He orders Cliff to track her down and bring her to him. Although killing himself was the casino boss' choice, his father wants Charlie to have the same fate as his son.
