James Cameron, 68, is one of Hollywood's most well-known directors. He's been at the helm of many of the industry's greatest films throughout the years, including Titanic, True Lies, Aliens, Terminator, Avatar, Alita: Battle Angel, and other. He's also the author of several film adaptations that have been named "the King of the World," and his epic period drama is still in contention for the most Oscar victories.
James has been married no less than five times on the set of the Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet-led film Avatar: The Way Of Water. Here's what's important to know about the women he's loved in his life behind the scenes.
Suzy Amis is a model and actress.
In the mid 1990's, James met Suzy, who played Rose's granddaughter Lizzy Calvert in the contemporary scenes of Titanic. She married Linda Hamilton in 1997, amid speculation that he was already in a relationship with the Titanic actress. They have since welcomed daughters Claire and Elizabeth, and son James Quinn (known as Quinn Cameron).
James was previously married to Sam Robards, the actor son of Jason Robards and screen legend Lauren Bacall, and was an outspoken vegan, environmentalist, and former Ford model.
"Being attracted to strong independent women has the disadvantage that they're strong independent women — they inherently don't need you," James said, per PEOPLE in December 2022. "I'm married now to a strong independent woman who does believe she needs me."
Linda Hamilton is a well-known author.
Linda was directing James in the 1984 film The Terminator and in 1991's Terminator 2: Judgment Day. They married in 1997, only to have their relationship unravel when James seemed to move on with Suzy.
In a 2019 interview, James presented Terminator: Dark Fate, while Linda reprised her role as Sarah Connor. "We are terribly confused," she told The New York Times.
"I think what happened there is that he fell in love with Sarah Connor," she told the newspaper. "And I did as well."
Kathryn Bigelow is a business consultant.
What is the value of having an Oscar winning director without a wife? From 1989 to 1991, James was married to Kathryn Bigelow, the noted director of The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty. She was the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director for the former, winning the monumental, historic award in 2010.
In a 2010 print interview with Collider, he pantomimed strangling her and hugging her. But he couldn't resist suggesting a little "improvement" on her gritty masterpiece. "I think [The Hurt Locker] would have been much better in 3D," he said. "But I'm envisioning a future where you don't have to put 'in 3D' on the movie poster anymore."
Gale Anne Hurd is a German actress.
Gale Anne Hurd was executive producer for 1984's Terminator 2: Judgment Day and was married to James from 1985 until 1989. She was a close collaborator on several of James' films, including Aliens and The Abyss.
From 1991 to 1993, she married Mission: Impossible director Brian De Palma, who gave birth to their daughter in 1991. She married screenwriter and director Jonathan Hensleigh in 1995.
Sharon Williams is a well-known actress.
James was married to his first wife, Sharon Williams, from 1978-1984. Sharon and his first marriage would last six years, three times longer than his marriages to Gale, Kathryn, and Linda, both of whom only served two years as the director.
