Millions of Chinese World of Warcraft players have said their final goodbyes to Azeroth. Blizzard has shut down the servers for almost all of its MMORPG projects in China. Overwatch 2, Diablo 3, and Hearthstone have all been closed by developers.
Blizzard games have been available in China since 2008 as a result of a NetEase agreement. According to Chinese legislation, foreign developers must cooperate with local enterprises to enter the market. However, 14 years after the expiration of the contract, the two large corporations could not reach an agreement on its renewal.
Blizzard has already indicated that it is in discussions with several potential partners to continue publishing its games in China. Only time will tell whether or not the developers will be able to strike an agreement with someone.
