James Webb discovers the coldest ice in space ...

Scientists have discovered water ice and more complicated matter in the Chameleon I molecular cloud, approximately 630 light years away from Earth, using the James Webb Telescope (JWST). These findings have the lowest temperature ever recorded in a cloud.

Scientists discovered water, methane, ammonia, and other complex substances in the Chameleon I cloud, which also contained components of all living organisms.

The ability of the James Webb Space Telescope to detect water ice here will reveal more information about ice deposits and the formation of larger structures, such as planets and their atmospheres.

Melissa McClure of the Leiden Observatory in the Netherlands, who is leading the research group, said the data they obtained is only the first part of a series of spectral images, and scientists will provide further information on the composition of the traditionally mysterious molecular clouds in the near future.
