In 1997, what happened to the Uphaar Cinema fire tragedy in Delhi?

The real shame of the cinema disaster is that, according to all accounts, the fire could have been prevented. An alarm bell rang out of the cinema at 6.55 am on the morning of the tragedy, alerting a security guard who immediately dispatched the fire brigade which immediately extinguished the fire. The fire brigade was dispatched mid-morning, and repairs were performed.

The incident was supposedly resolved by 11.30 am. However, repairs for this equipment appeared to be insufficient; a hole would burst into the auditorium around 5 pm on the day of the fire. Dangerous black smoke would eventually enter the auditorium, and individuals would begin to succumb to the poisonous gas.

The cinema's power was temporarily drained, but the crowds fled the scene without emergency lighting or personnel to help. One of the most shocking revelations was that the balcony's middle doors had been locked during the screening of the film, and the worker at the time had left without handing the responsibility over to his replacement.

Another shocking revelation is that additional seating that had been constructed has also blocked or restricted exits. These are just a few of the many incidents that resulted in the tragic death of the fire.

There were several attempts to save the patrons as the fire erupted, and people began to suffocate due to the smoke. One such attempt was made by an off-duty Captain of the Indian army who attempted to help others escape the disaster. A further one hundred and three people were injured.
