Steamforged board games tend to follow a set pattern. The board is created randomly by drawing and aligning tiles. This makes every attempt at the game different. From there, the player collects items, fights enemies, and confronts a boss.

From humanoid creatures to massive beasts, different encounters may be encountered at any time, keeping the player's surprise even when the cards are on the table. There is also usually an option to keep the same character repeated throughout the main game and expansions.
